Shale Volume - GR

Gamma ray index (IGR) is calculated from the well logging tool that has its same name. This index takes into account minimum gamma ray (GR) value (cleanest zone), the maximum GR value (most shaly zone), and the value of the study area or depth.

Where:
• IGR= gamma ray index
• GRlog= gamma ray reading of formation
• GRmin= minimum gamma ray (clean sand or carbonate)
• GRmax= maximum gamma ray (shale)

Gamma ray index is the starting point to calculate shale volume from different equations from a diversity of authors.
